At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to care for his flock of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes through the solo tree on the mountaintop were here his main co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his wards imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plan.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One morning he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This trick persisted for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf actually come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
